Description
Puccinia calcitrapae is a specialized obligate phytopathogenic fungus from the Basidiomycota phylum, belonging to the Pucciniales order. Taxonomically, this species acts as a causal agent of rust disease affecting various members of the Asteraceae family, including cornflowers, safflower, thistles, and other related composite plants.
The primary disease caused by this fungus is leaf and stem rust. The infection manifests as the development of pustules (uredinia and telia) which rupture the plant epidermis, leading to premature leaf desiccation, disruption of photosynthetic processes, and a significant reduction in the overall vigor and productivity of the host plants.
The biology of the pathogen is characterized by a complex life cycle, which may involve the alternation of different spore stages (aeciospores, urediniospores, teliospores, and basidiospores). The fungus can survive in the soil or on plant debris as teliospores, which are highly resistant to freezing temperatures. During spring, in the presence of free moisture, these spores germinate to initiate a new infection cycle.
Optimal conditions for development and rapid spread include moderate temperatures (ranging from +15°C to +22°C) and high air humidity. During periods of prolonged rainfall, heavy dew, or in overcrowded planting conditions, fungal spores are easily dispersed by wind and water splash, potentially causing rapid epiphytotic outbreaks in areas with high host density.
Control and management strategies are focused on minimizing the inoculum density and preventing further spread. Recommended measures include:
- Removal and destruction of crop residues and deep plowing to bury infested plant material.
- Implementation of proper crop rotation to avoid planting susceptible species in the same field for several consecutive years.
- Application of appropriate fungicides (such as copper-based products or triazoles) when initial symptoms appear.
- Weed management to eliminate alternative reservoirs that harbor the pathogen during the off-season.
