Description

The fungus Puccinia hordei is classified within the kingdom Fungi, phylum Basidiomycota, class Pucciniomycetes, and genus Puccinia. It is an obligate biotrophic parasite and is recognized globally as the primary agent responsible for barley leaf rust, a significant disease affecting cereal production worldwide.

The infection is characterized by the appearance of small, circular or oval, light-brown to orange uredinia (pustules) on leaves and leaf sheaths. In severe cases, these pustules coalesce, covering the entire leaf surface. As the season progresses, dark-brown or black telia appear, marking the transition to the survival phase of the pathogen.

The life cycle is complex and often heteroecious, involving Ornithogalum species as alternate hosts for the aecial stage. However, in many temperate regions, the cycle is maintained primarily through the production of urediniospores on volunteer barley plants and winter crops, which can spread the pathogen over long distances via wind currents.

Optimal conditions for Puccinia hordei development include moderate temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C combined with high humidity or leaf wetness caused by dew or rain. High moisture levels are critical for the germination of urediniospores and the successful penetration of the leaf stomata by the germ tubes.

The economic impact of the disease is substantial, as leaf rust disrupts the plant's physiological processes, leading to reduced photosynthesis and premature senescence. This results in significant yield losses, often ranging from 10% to 40% in susceptible cultivars, as well as reduced grain weight and poor malt quality, causing severe economic damage.
