Systematic position and pathogen profile: Tilletia foetida (synonym Tilletia laevis) belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Basidiomycota, and class Ustilaginomycetes. This pathogen is the causal agent of common bunt or stinking smut in wheat crops. It is an obligate parasite, meaning it requires a living host to complete its life cycle and is highly specialized in infecting specific species of the Triticum genus.
Symptoms of the infection: The disease is typically identified during the grain-filling stage. Infected wheat ears often appear stunted or have an abnormal, splayed appearance with greenish-blue hues that persist longer than in healthy plants. The kernels are replaced by bunted grains (smut balls), which consist of a fragile membrane containing dark, powdery teliospores. When these balls rupture, they release a distinct, fishy odor caused by trimethylamine.
Biology and life cycle: The pathogen survives primarily as teliospores on the surface of seeds or within the soil. Infection occurs when the fungus and the wheat seed germinate simultaneously. The fungal hyphae penetrate the young wheat coleoptile before the emergence of the first leaf. Once inside, the fungus grows systemically within the plant, eventually replacing the plant's ovaries with fungal spores during the heading stage.
Environmental conditions and impact: Disease development is most aggressive when soil moisture is moderate and temperatures remain cool, typically between 5°C and 15°C at the time of seedling emergence. The economic impact is severe; not only is there a significant reduction in yield, but the grain becomes contaminated with spores, which causes discoloration and a foul smell that renders it unsuitable for milling and human consumption.
Control and management strategies: Effective management of common bunt relies on an integrated approach. The most critical step is the routine treatment of all seed stocks with appropriate chemical fungicides or biological seed dressings. Farmers should also utilize resistant wheat varieties and implement crop rotation. Furthermore, ensuring that seeds are properly cleaned and avoiding planting in cold, wet soil conditions significantly helps in reducing the incidence of the disease.
