Alfalfa rust

Uromyces striatus

Description

Systematic position and pathogen type: Uromyces striatus is a specialized phytopathogenic fungus belonging to the division Basidiomycota, order Pucciniales. As an obligate biotroph, it relies entirely on its host plant to obtain nutrients, causing a widespread disease known as alfalfa rust.

Diseases and host plants: This fungus primarily attacks alfalfa (lucerne), but can also affect several other legumes. The infection manifests as small, circular, reddish-brown pustules (uredinia) that rupture the epidermis of leaves, petioles, and stems, releasing masses of spores that further spread the infection across the field.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Uromyces striatus is heteroecious, meaning it requires different host plants to complete its stages. While alfalfa supports the uredinial and telial stages, various species of Euphorbia (spurge) serve as alternate hosts for the aecial and pycnial stages, facilitating the genetic diversity and seasonal survival of the fungus.

Development conditions and impact: Disease development is favored by warm, humid weather and the presence of surface moisture on leaves, which is essential for spore germination. The impact of the disease includes significant reduction in leaf area, early defoliation, decreased forage yield, and lower protein content, which negatively affects the overall nutritional quality of the hay.

Protection and control measures: Effective management relies on a combination of cultural practices, such as early harvesting to remove infected leaf tissue before spores disperse, and maintaining field sanitation. Planting resistant alfalfa cultivars is the most sustainable approach. Chemical control using fungicides is typically reserved for seed production fields under high disease pressure.
