Description
Systematic position: Blomia tjibodas belongs to the order Acariformes and the family Glycyphagidae. It is a microscopic mite species commonly associated with stored agricultural products, food processing facilities, and warehouses where organic matter accumulates.
Target crops and products: This species is a major pest of stored grains and their derivatives. It infests commodities such as wheat, flour, animal feed, oilseeds, and various organic residues that maintain high humidity levels suitable for the mite's metabolic activity and colonization.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle comprises the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph (hypopus), and adult stages. Under optimal conditions, including temperatures between 20–25°C and relative humidity above 70%, the mite can complete its life cycle in approximately 2–3 weeks. The ability to enter a specialized hypopus stage allows it to survive adverse environmental stress.
Nature of damage: Blomia tjibodas causes damage by feeding on the germ portion of seeds, significantly reducing germination rates. Beyond direct physical destruction, the mite contaminates stored goods with waste products, promotes self-heating of grain bulk, and facilitates the rapid growth of molds, rendering the inventory unsuitable for commerce.
Protection measures: Effective management relies on strict sanitation protocols and moisture control, ensuring stored grain moisture stays below 13%. Regular monitoring and cleaning of storage facilities are essential. In case of infestation, chemical control methods, including fumigation or the application of specialized acaricides on non-food storage structures, are employed.
