Blomia tropicalis is a microscopic mite belonging to the family Glycyphagidae within the order Sarcoptiformes. It is recognized globally as a significant pest in warm, humid climates, frequently infesting stored agricultural products and creating health hazards due to its potent allergenic proteins.

The mite primarily targets a wide range of stored goods, including cereals, grains, flour, animal feed, dried fruits, and even seeds. It thrives in environments where humidity levels are elevated, which often coincides with improper storage conditions that promote the growth of fungi and molds.

The life cycle of Blomia tropicalis consists of the egg, larva, protonymph, tritonymph, and adult stages. Under optimal temperatures of 25°C to 30°C and high humidity, the generation time is remarkably short. This biological capacity allows the population to explode rapidly, leading to heavy infestations in bulk storage units.

The damage caused by these mites is primarily qualitative and economic. By feeding on the dust, fungal spores, and organic debris within the grain mass, they contaminate the products with their feces, cast skins, and secretions.
