Description
Taxonomic position: The flour mite (Gohieria fusca) is classified within the class Arachnida, order Acariformes, and family Glycyphagidae. It is a well-known microscopic pest that thrives in environments where dry foodstuffs and agricultural commodities are stored.
Crops affected: This pest primarily targets stored grains, flour, cereals, oilseeds, and dried fruits. It also frequently infests animal feed and organic fertilizers. Because it feeds on the microflora associated with moist products, damp storage conditions significantly increase the risk of infestation.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves several stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Given suitable temperatures (approx. 20–25°C) and high relative humidity, the species exhibits a rapid reproductive rate. During adverse conditions, the mite can enter a specialized survival stage known as a hypopus, which is highly resistant to desiccation and chemical treatments.
Nature of damage and pest status: Gohieria fusca feeds specifically on the embryo of the grain, leading to total loss of viability. The accumulation of feces, molted skins, and associated fungi renders the commodities unfit for human or animal consumption. Heavily infested products often develop a distinct sour or musty odor.
Protection measures: Management strategies are largely preventive. Maintaining grain moisture content below 13% is the most effective way to prevent outbreaks.
