Glycyphagus mite

Systematic position of the Glycyphagus genus places it within the class Arachnida, order Acariformes. These mites are well-known as significant storage pests that adapt perfectly to indoor environments, particularly grain elevators, warehouses, and domestic storages where they thrive on stored commodities.

The pests primarily damage stored cereals, oilseeds, dried fruits, legumes, and various feed ingredients. Because they are microscopic and often go unnoticed until a population explosion occurs, they represent a hidden threat to the quality and commercial value of agricultural produce stored in silos and warehouses.

Biology and development of these mites are driven by humidity and temperature. They are highly sensitive to moisture levels; thus, their population growth is exponential in grain with a moisture content exceeding 13-14%. The life cycle includes egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph (or hypopus stage for survival), and adult stages, allowing them to endure unfavorable conditions before resuming rapid multiplication.

Nature of damage involves the destruction of the grain embryo, which effectively ruins the seed for planting purposes. Beyond physical feeding, these mites significantly contaminate the products with their allergens, feces, and carcasses, which leads to heating, caking of the grain, and the secondary development of mycotoxin-producing molds.
