The house grain mite (Glycyphagus domesticus) is a significant pest belonging to the order Acariformes and the family Glycyphagidae. It is widely recognized in agronomy and storage management as a major threat to stored agricultural products and diverse dried organic materials.
This mite infests a broad array of commodities, including cereal grains, flour, processed cereals, dried fruits, medicinal herbs, and oilseeds. It thrives primarily in environments with high relative humidity, often becoming a persistent problem in warehouses that lack proper moisture control and climate regulation.
The biological cycle of this species is highly temperature-dependent, with optimal development occurring between 20°C and 25°C. A unique survival strategy of this mite is the formation of a hypopus, a resistant stage that allows it to survive extreme conditions and utilize other insects as vectors for dispersal.
The damage caused by these mites is primarily due to their feeding on the grain germ, which destroys germination potential. Furthermore, they contaminate the products with their feces, shed skins, and carcasses, which imparts an unpleasant odor and significantly increases the risk of secondary mold contamination.
