Gohieria mite

The Gohieria genus, represented primarily by Gohieria fusca, consists of specialized acari-form mites belonging to the family Glycyphagidae. These pests are strictly synanthropic, thriving exclusively in human-made storage facilities, granaries, and processing plants where plant-derived commodities are stocked.

These mites infest a variety of stored products, including cereals, flour, seeds, and dried fruits. They are particularly attracted to areas where grain has begun to spoil due to moisture absorption or inadequate aeration, which creates a nutrient-rich environment for their population to explode.

The biological cycle of Gohieria is highly adaptive. Under optimal conditions of warm temperature and high humidity, these mites reproduce rapidly. A crucial survival mechanism is the hypopus stage, a specialized developmental phase that allows the mites to withstand desiccation, starvation, and exposure to certain environmental stresses until conditions improve.

The primary damage caused by these mites includes the consumption of the germ and endosperm of stored seeds, directly impacting seed viability. Furthermore, their presence introduces excrement and debris into the grain mass, which encourages the growth of molds and bacteria, significantly degrading the quality and safety of the stored commodities.

Management strategies focus on preventive sanitation and climate control within storage facilities. Key actions include:

• Regulating storage moisture content below 13-14%.
• Regular cleaning of storage equipment and surrounding areas to remove dust and spilled grain.
• Implementing regular monitoring and testing of stored samples for signs of mite infestation.
• Using authorized chemical fumigants when heavy infestations are confirmed to protect the value of the stock.
