Description
Lepidoglyphus destructor, known as the groceries mite or house mite, belongs to the family Glycyphagidae (acaroid mites) of the order Acariformes. This microscopic pest is one of the most significant threats to stored agricultural commodities, particularly grain, seeds, and various processed food products.
The pest attacks a wide range of cultures, including cereals (wheat, rye, barley), oilseeds, legumes, flour, animal feed, as well as dried fruits and medicinal raw materials. It frequently appears in storage facilities where high humidity levels and poor ventilation are maintained.
The biology and lifecycle of the mite are directly dependent on environmental conditions. Under optimal temperatures of 20–25°C and relative humidity above 65–70%, one generation develops in 12–15 days. In unfavorable conditions, the mite can form a hypopus — a special dormant stage that allows it to survive drought or lack of food.
The nature of damage involves active consumption of the grain embryo, which drastically reduces germination rates. The pest contaminates products with feces, chitinous remains, and corpses, which triggers the development of mold fungi, causes heating of the grain mass, and renders the product unfit for human or animal consumption.
Control measures are based on strict management of storage conditions. It is essential to maintain proper temperature and humidity regimes, conduct regular cleaning of warehouses to remove dust and debris, and perform fumigation of facilities and disinfection of containers using approved pesticides. An effective preventive method is drying grain to a critical moisture level where the mite's development is physically impossible.
