Flat mite

Systematic position of this pest places it within the family Tenuipalpidae, often referred to as flat mites or false spider mites, in the order Trombidiformes. Unlike the common spider mites, these microscopic arthropods are distinguished by their flattened bodies and lack of web spinning, which allows them to remain cryptic within the plant crevices and leaf axils.

Host range includes a variety of ornamental plants, particularly those belonging to the Juncus genus. Because of their tiny size and habit of hiding in concealed parts of the plant, they can easily infest indoor plants and greenhouse collections. If left unchecked, they can spread rapidly across a collection, causing significant stress to the host plants.

Biology and life cycle comprise stages such as egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. The developmental rate is highly influenced by temperature, with warmer conditions significantly shortening the generation time. These mites are known to thrive in protected environments, where they can reproduce continuously, making their management a persistent challenge for gardeners and commercial growers.

Damage symptoms and harmfulness arise from the mites piercing the plant cells and feeding on the sap. Initially, this manifests as subtle stippling or chlorotic spots on the leaf surface. As the population increases, these symptoms merge, leading to severe leaf discoloration, reduced photosynthesis, stunted growth, and in extreme cases, total defoliation of the infested plant.

Control measures must be systematic to be effective. Integrated pest management strategies involve cultural practices such as maintaining proper plant hygiene and humidity levels. When populations exceed economic thresholds, the application of acaricides is necessary. Proper coverage of the undersides of leaves and crevices is essential to ensure efficacy against these hidden pests.
