Description
Cacopaurus is a genus of plant-parasitic nematodes belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Criconematidae. These microscopic soil-dwelling organisms are known for their impact on permanent crops, where they feed on root systems, causing significant stress to the host plants.
The primary host for this nematode genus is the walnut tree. By feeding on the cortical cells of the roots, the nematodes disrupt the vascular function of the plant. This localized damage often goes unnoticed until the tree shows visible signs of decline, such as canopy thinning and reduced overall vitality.
Regarding their biology, Cacopaurus species are characterized as semi-endoparasites. Adult females typically penetrate the root surface with their anterior region to feed, while the rest of their body remains external. Their life cycle, comprising several juvenile stages, is closely linked to root exudates and soil moisture levels, which trigger developmental progression.
Damage to crops is often cumulative. Infested trees exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and reduced nut yield. Because the root system is physically damaged by the nematodes' stylets, the plant becomes unable to efficiently uptake water and nutrients, which is especially detrimental during high-transpiration periods or summer drought.
Management strategies focus on preventing the introduction of the pest into clean orchard sites. Key control measures include:
- Rigorous testing of soil samples before planting new orchards;
- The use of certified nematode-free nursery stock;
- Chemical treatment with nematicides in severe infestation cases;
- Improving soil structure and irrigation management to help trees tolerate parasitic stress.
