Description
Paratylenchus hamatus, commonly known as the pin nematode, belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Tylenchulidae. It is a widespread ectoparasitic nematode that primarily inhabits the soil and feeds on the root systems of various economically significant plant species across the globe.
This pest has a very broad host range. It commonly infests vegetables such as celery, onions, carrots, and lettuce, as well as several ornamental plants and fruit crops. Because they are ectoparasites, they do not enter the root tissue fully but feed externally, causing cumulative stress on the plant's vascular system.
The life cycle of the pin nematode involves the egg, four juvenile stages, and the adult phase. Reproduction is usually sexual, and the population can rise rapidly during the growing season under favorable moisture and soil temperature conditions. They survive in the soil by feeding on roots or entering a state of diapause when host plants are unavailable.
The damage caused by Paratylenchus hamatus is often subtle and manifests as general plant decline. Key symptoms include:
- stunted growth and poor overall development;
- leaf yellowing (chlorosis) and wilting during dry periods;
- reduced nutrient uptake;
- browning and necrosis of the root tips.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this nematode. Strategies include long-term crop rotation with non-host plants, improving soil health through organic amendments, and utilizing certified pest-free seedlings.
