Paratylenchus

Paratylenchus is a genus of microscopic parasitic nematodes belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Paratylenchidae. Known as pin nematodes, these organisms are among the smallest plant-parasitic nematodes. They act as ectoparasites, feeding on the epidermal cells of plant roots without entering the root tissue entirely.

This genus possesses a wide host range, making it a significant pest in global agriculture. It causes damage to a variety of plants, including fruit trees, small fruits like strawberries and raspberries, ornamental plants, vegetables, and various field crops. Their presence in the rhizosphere can severely impact overall crop vigor and productivity.

The life cycle of Paratylenchus includes an egg stage, four juvenile stages, and the adult stage. The nematodes thrive in diverse soil conditions, often completing their life cycle within a few weeks under optimal temperature and moisture. Adults use their needle-like stylets to pierce root cells and extract nutrients, often leaving behind localized damage that compromises root integrity.

The damage caused by these nematodes is often insidious. By feeding on roots, they restrict the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients effectively. Typical symptoms of infestation include stunted growth, chlorosis, root necrosis, and reduced yields. These plants often appear drought-stressed even when soil moisture is adequate, and they become more susceptible to other soil-borne diseases.

Integrated management approaches are crucial for controlling Paratylenchus populations:
