Paratylenchus bukowinensis is a species of plant-parasitic nematodes belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Paratylenchidae. These microscopic organisms are recognized as significant soil-borne pests that affect the root systems of various agricultural and horticultural crops, often leading to reduced plant vigor and crop yield losses.

The host range of this nematode is quite broad. It affects numerous vegetables, berry crops, and perennials. Because they act as ectoparasites, they colonize the surface of the roots, causing localized injury that disrupts the uptake of essential minerals and water, particularly during the critical early stages of plant development.

The biology of Paratylenchus bukowinensis is characterized by a relatively simple life cycle that takes place entirely in the soil. It includes the egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult phase. These nematodes are known for their ability to survive in moist soil and can persist for extended periods even when suitable host crops are temporarily unavailable, making them difficult to eradicate once established.

Damage symptoms are often nonspecific, which makes identification challenging. Typical signs include stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and wilting during dry periods. The primary damage is the destruction of root hairs and cortex cells, which facilitates secondary infections by soil-borne fungi and bacteria, leading to further decay of the root system and plant collapse.
