Description

Systematic position. The carnation needle nematode (Paratylenchus dianthus) is a microscopic worm belonging to the phylum Nematoda, order Tylenchida, and family Tylenchulidae. It is a strictly root-feeding ectoparasite that spends its lifecycle within the rhizosphere of its host plants.

Host plants. This species primarily targets carnations (Dianthus genus), acting as a significant threat to floriculture. While highly host-specific, it can occasionally affect other related ornamental species grown in greenhouse environments where monoculture conditions prevail.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of eggs, juvenile stages, and adults. These nematodes are typically migratory ectoparasites, meaning they remain outside the root tissue while feeding. They use their specialized stylets to penetrate root cells and extract nutrients, which allows them to thrive even if they do not enter the root tissue itself.

Damage and severity. The damage is primarily physiological. By feeding on root hairs, the nematode restricts the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients. Infected plants show stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting, especially under water stress. In severe cases, the reduction in root volume significantly lowers the quality and marketable yield of the flowers.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this nematode. Strategies include:

  • Steam sterilization of greenhouse soils.
  • Strict sanitation protocols for tools and pots.
  • Sourcing nematode-free planting stock.
  • Application of approved chemical nematicides when infestation levels exceed economic thresholds.
