Longidorus martini is a soil-dwelling plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. These organisms are recognized as significant agricultural pests due to their ability to damage root systems and transmit pathogenic plant viruses, posing a threat to global crop production.
This nematode parasitizes a wide range of hosts, including field crops, vegetables, and fruit plants. It typically thrives in light-textured, sandy soils, which facilitate its movement. Infestations often go unnoticed until visible patches of stunted, chlorotic plants appear in the field, indicating compromised root function.
The biology of this species is characterized by the use of a long odontostyle to feed on the root meristem of the host. This feeding process causes cell death, root swelling, and the cessation of primary root elongation. Because these nematodes do not enter the root but feed from the outside, they are classified as migratory ectoparasites.
The damage caused by Longidorus martini is two-fold. Firstly, the direct feeding weakens the plant and reduces its ability to uptake water and nutrients. Secondly, they act as vectors for nepoviruses, which can have devastating economic impacts on yields, leading to poor quality produce and market loss for the agricultural enterprise.
