As an ectoparasite, it feeds on the cells of plant roots, particularly targeting the tender tips and root hairs. Due to its microscopic size, it often remains unnoticed until significant plant damage becomes apparent in the field or greenhouse.

The host range of Paratylenchus nanus is extensive, affecting a variety of vegetable crops, fruit bushes, and ornamental plants. By colonizing the root zone, the nematodes impair the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients.
