Epazote

Epazote (Latin: Chenopodium ambrosioides L.), also known as Mexican tea, is an aromatic plant belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. While often considered a weed in many parts of the world, it is actively cultivated as a medicinal and culinary herb, valued for its unique phytochemical profile and essential oils.

The plant originates from Central and South America. Historically used by indigenous cultures, it has spread throughout warm regions globally. Today, its cultivation is primarily focused in regions where climate allows for consistent sunlight and moderate moisture, which are critical for maximizing the accumulation of active compounds in its leaves.

Botanically, Epazote is an annual or perennial herbaceous plant reaching up to 1 meter in height. It features lanceolate leaves with serrated edges and produces small, inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers. The entire plant is covered with tiny, glandular hairs that store the characteristic aromatic oil, which gives the plant its pungent, citrusy scent.

Epazote is not particularly demanding regarding soil quality, but it thrives in well-drained, nutrient-rich soils with full sun exposure. It is drought-tolerant, which makes it a resilient crop for semi-arid environments. Standard agricultural practices include thinning seedlings to ensure proper air circulation and harvesting the leaves just before or during the initial flowering stage to ensure potency.

Economically, this crop is used for producing ascaridole-rich essential oil, utilized in herbal medicine as an anthelmintic agent. In culinary applications, it is a staple ingredient in Mexican cuisine, prized for its ability to reduce flatulence when cooked with legumes. Typical pests include aphids and mites, while fungal diseases can be mitigated through proper spacing and moisture control.
