Flax dodder (Cuscuta epilinum) is a highly specialized parasitic plant belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. Unlike generalist dodder species, this organism has evolved to specifically target flax, making it a critical threat to both fiber and seed flax production worldwide.

The origin of flax dodder is closely tied to the history of flax cultivation, primarily across Europe and parts of Asia. It thrives in temperate climates where moisture levels are sufficient for the germination of its seeds and the development of the host plant. It is categorized as a noxious weed in many agricultural jurisdictions.

Botanically, it is a leafless, rootless vine that lacks chlorophyll. It relies entirely on its host for survival. After germinating in the soil, the seedling must find a flax stem within a short time; once attached, it forms haustoria that penetrate the host tissues to extract water, carbohydrates, and essential nutrients, eventually causing the host to wither.

Regarding agrotechnology, the management of flax dodder is complex. Because the seeds of the parasite are similar in size and shape to flax seeds, they are notoriously difficult to separate mechanically. Furthermore, the parasite’s lifecycle is perfectly synchronized with that of the flax plant, complicating the timing of intervention.

The economic impact of flax dodder is severe. Infestations lead to dramatic reductions in both the quantity and quality of flax fiber. Furthermore, the presence of these seeds in a grain harvest often leads to the rejection of the entire lot by inspectors, as it poses a significant biosecurity risk for future planting seasons.
