Greater dodder

The greater dodder (Cuscuta europaea L.) is an annual parasitic plant belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. In agricultural terms, it is considered a significant quarantine pest rather than a crop. Lacking chlorophyll and true roots, it relies entirely on its host plants for nutrition, often leading to severe stunting or death of the host organism.

Its native range covers a vast area across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. The plant thrives in diverse environments, from riverbanks and hedgerows to agricultural fields. It is a highly invasive species that targets a wide range of hosts, including legumes, ornamental shrubs, and vegetable crops, making it a major challenge for plant protection services globally.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its slender, thread-like stems that coil around the host. It employs specialized structures known as haustoria to penetrate the host's vascular system, drawing out water, minerals, and essential nutrients. This efficient parasitic mechanism allows it to survive even in nutrient-poor soils as long as a suitable host is available nearby.

Control of Cuscuta europaea is primarily preventative. Agronomic practices involve the use of weed-free, certified seeds and strict field sanitation. Because it produces thousands of seeds that remain viable in the soil for several years, crop rotation with non-host species is essential to break the life cycle. Mechanical control is often necessary, involving the removal and destruction of infested patches before the plant seeds.

The economic impact of the greater dodder is severe. Its presence results in significant yield reductions and compromises the quality of forage crops, which may become unpalatable or toxic to livestock. Beyond direct nutrient theft, the dodder acts as an efficient vector for numerous plant viruses, posing a critical threat to biosecurity in both large-scale farming and home gardening.
