The Dutch iris is a widely cultivated hybrid group resulting from the cross-breeding of Iris xiphium and Iris tingitana. Belonging to the Iridaceae family, these bulbous perennials are essential for the commercial flower trade, admired for their structural elegance and vibrant color palette which makes them a staple in professional floriculture.

While the genetic origins trace back to Mediterranean climates, Dutch irises are now cultivated globally, particularly in temperate zones. Commercial production typically takes place in controlled environments, such as greenhouses, where light and temperature can be manipulated to meet market demand for early or late-season blooms.

Botanically, the plant develops from a bulb, producing slender, lance-shaped foliage and a rigid floral stalk. The flower morphology is distinct, consisting of three upright standard petals and three drooping falls, providing an architectural aesthetic. Modern hybrids are specifically bred for stem strength, flower size, and durability during transport.

Optimal agrotechnical conditions include well-draining, sandy-loam soils with a neutral pH. The plants require high light intensity and are sensitive to excessive soil moisture, which poses a significant risk of root and bulb decay. A controlled fertilization program, focusing on phosphorus and potassium, is crucial during the active vegetative growth phase to ensure proper bulb development.

The primary economic value of the Dutch iris lies in its use as a cut flower. It is highly favored by commercial growers for its long vase life and ease of packing. While some gardeners use them in perennial beds, they are often treated as annuals in cooler regions, as the bulbs may require lifting in autumn to prevent damage from freezing temperatures during winter dormancy.

The crop is susceptible to several pathogens, including Fusarium basal rot and various leaf spot diseases, which are often exacerbated by high humidity and poor ventilation. Common pests, such as aphids and bulb mites, can also compromise the health and vigor of the plants. Effective management involves integrated pest management strategies, starting with the selection of certified disease-free bulbs and maintaining proper hygiene within the planting area.
