The plant originates from the Mediterranean region, with Italy being historically the most significant producer. It is well-adapted to Mediterranean climates, thriving in rocky, well-drained soils under full sun. While it is grown as an ornamental plant globally, commercial cultivation for rhizome production is localized in specific climatic zones with warm, dry summers.

Botanically, the plant features a thick, fleshy, creeping rhizome and sword-shaped, glaucous leaves. It produces large, fragrant white or pale blue flowers. The plant's structure is optimized for water conservation, allowing it to withstand long periods of drought, which makes it a resilient crop for semi-arid areas.

Agricultural success depends on providing excellent drainage; saturated soils are detrimental and lead to rapid rhizome decay. The preferred soil type is alkaline or neutral, rich in nutrients but not overly fertilized with nitrogen, which could cause excessive leafy growth at the expense of root development. Regular maintenance, including weeding and thinning of the rhizome clumps, is essential for high-quality production.
