The Dutch iris (Iris xiphium) is a significant bulbous ornamental crop belonging to the Iridaceae family. It is a group of hybrids developed primarily through the cross-breeding of Spanish irises. These plants are widely cultivated both in professional greenhouse operations for cut flower production and in private gardens due to their elegant appearance and vibrant color range.

The native range of the ancestral species includes the Mediterranean basin and North Africa. Given their origin, Dutch irises are adapted to mild, temperate climates. Today, they are commercially grown across the globe, with the Netherlands serving as the primary hub for bulb production and new variety development, reflecting the long history of breeding in this region.

Botanically, the Dutch iris is characterized by slender, grass-like foliage and a sturdy stem that produces large, showy flowers. Unlike rhizomatous irises, the Dutch iris grows from a bulb wrapped in thin, papery tunics. The flowers feature a distinct structure with three drooping falls and three upright standards, making them a preferred choice for floral arrangements.

Successful cultivation requires well-draining, sandy or loamy soils with a neutral pH. The plants are highly susceptible to bulb rot, making moisture management critical. In regions with harsh winters, bulbs are typically planted in the spring and lifted after the foliage dies back to ensure the bulbs remain dry and dormant during the cold months, which is essential for healthy development.
