Winter heath (Latin: Erica carnea L.) is a low-growing, evergreen shrub belonging to the Ericaceae family. Known for its remarkable hardiness, it is a staple in rock gardens and landscapes where early seasonal interest is desired, as it produces delicate, bell-shaped flowers even in late winter or very early spring.

Originating from the mountainous regions of Central and Southern Europe, this species has evolved to thrive in rocky, well-drained terrains. Its natural adaptation allows it to flourish in gardens where other ornamental shrubs might struggle, provided the specific soil and exposure requirements are carefully met by the grower.

The cultural success of Erica carnea heavily depends on the soil composition. It strictly requires acidic, sandy, or peaty soil that is consistently moist but possesses excellent drainage. Gardeners should avoid alkaline environments at all costs, as the plant cannot absorb necessary nutrients in high-pH soil, leading to chlorosis and stunted development.

Maintenance involves routine pruning once the flowering season concludes to prevent the plant from becoming woody and sparse. Water management is critical during the summer months to ensure the root system does not dry out, yet waterlogging must be avoided to prevent root rot, which is the most common cause of plant failure in garden settings.
