PRIMORSKIY CHAMPION

PRIMORSKIY CHAMPION is a black currant variety bred in the Primorsky Krai by crossing the prolific Lya variety with the wild currant Aldan grapevine. Bushes of this variety are of medium height, semi-spreading, and of medium density, with woody shoots that are brownish in color, transitioning to light gray with a yellowish tint. Leaves are three-lobed, light green, and dull, with a small notch at the base. Flowers are bowl-shaped, pinkish, and racemes of medium length contain about 10 flowers of medium density.

Berries of the PRIMORSKIY CHAMPION variety have a bluish-black matte color with a strong waxy bloom, round or oval shape, and medium size. The taste of the berries is sweet-sour, although it is considered mediocre. The average berry weight is about 0.6-0.7 grams. The chemical composition of the fruit includes soluble dry matter at 13.9%, total sugars 5.8%, titratable acidity 3.5%, ascorbic acid ranging from 92 to 120 mg per 100 grams, as well as a significant content of R-active substances — 420 mg per 100 grams.

The variety is distinguished by early ripening, high yield of up to 7-8 tons per hectare, and high winter hardiness, withstanding frosts down to -43°C. It is self-fertile and well-adapted to the climatic conditions of the Asian part of Russia. Despite resistance to powdery mildew, the variety is susceptible to fungal diseases, particularly anthracnose. Berries are suitable for both fresh consumption and processing.
