Alternaria alternata is a fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi, genus Alternaria. It is a cosmopolitan, opportunistic pathogen that acts as both a saprophyte and a parasite. Its ability to survive in diverse environmental conditions and feed on a wide range of host plants makes it one of the most significant threats in modern agricultural production worldwide.
The fungus is primarily known for causing alternaria leaf spot and blights on various economically important crops, including solanaceous vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes, pome fruits like apples, and various cereals. Symptoms typically manifest as dark, necrotic lesions with characteristic concentric rings, often leading to chlorosis, premature wilting, and severe tissue decay in infected plants.
The life cycle of Alternaria alternata is driven by the production of abundant conidia, which are easily dispersed by wind, water splashes, and agricultural equipment. The fungus thrives in warm, humid climates, where temperatures ranging between 20°C and 28°C and high relative humidity facilitate rapid infection and colonization of plant tissues. It overwinters as mycelium or dormant spores in infested soil or crop residues.
The economic impact of this pathogen is twofold: it directly reduces yield through tissue destruction and negatively impacts the post-harvest quality of produce. Alternaria alternata produces various mycotoxins, such as alternariol and tenuazonic acid, which pose health risks and reduce the commercial value of fruits and vegetables by causing storage rots that spread rapidly in warehouses.
Management of Alternaria alternata requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize infection pressure:
- sanitation practices to eliminate crop debris and primary inoculum sources;
- crop rotation with non-host species;
- application of protective and systemic fungicides during critical growth stages;
- maintaining plant vigor through optimal irrigation and balanced mineral fertilization.
