Description

Claviceps zizaniae is a highly specialized phytopathogenic fungus from the genus Claviceps, which affects plants of the grass family, particularly those of the genus Zizania (wild rice). This species belongs to the kingdom Fungi and the phylum Ascomycota. It is an obligate parasite that relies entirely on the tissues of its host plant, eventually developing characteristic sclerotia in place of the infected ovaries.

The primary disease caused by this fungus is known as ergot. The pathogen infects the inflorescences of wild rice during the flowering stage. Fungal spores land on the stigma, germinate, and replace the developing ovary with dense fungal mycelium, which matures into a dark, hardened structure called a sclerotium. These structures protrude from the spikelets, making the infection easily detectable during field inspections.

The life cycle of Claviceps zizaniae is closely linked to the phenological stages of the host plant. Primary infection occurs in spring or early summer through ascospores released from overwintered sclerotia. Later, the infected plants develop a conidial stage known as honeydew, which contains a sweet, sticky secretion. This secretion attracts insects that facilitate the spread of conidia to healthy flowers, leading to secondary infections.

Conditions that favor the mass spread of the pathogen include cool, wet weather during the wild rice flowering period. Prolonged rainfall and high humidity create an ideal environment for spore germination and the dispersal of conidia via water splashes or insect pollinators. During dry weather, the severity of the infection typically decreases as the process of ovary colonization becomes significantly more difficult.

The economic damage caused by Claviceps zizaniae involves a direct reduction in grain yield, as sclerotia replace the healthy seeds. Furthermore, the presence of these sclerotia in harvested grain renders it unsuitable for food or feed consumption due to the high concentration of toxic alkaloids. To control this pathogen, growers use agronomic practices such as planting certified disease-free seeds, deep plowing to bury sclerotia, and weed management to eliminate alternative hosts around fields.
