Description
Systematic position. The kola nut weevil (Balanogastris kolae) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a highly specialized insect pest known for its capacity to infest stored and ripening fruits, significantly reducing the yield and quality of various nut-bearing trees in tropical and subtropical climates.
Affected crops and damage. The primary host is the kola nut tree (Cola acuminata), though the weevil is notorious for infesting various crops within its habitat. The economic impact is severe, as the larvae feed internally on the kernels, rendering the nuts hollow and useless for both domestic consumption and commercial trade, often leading to total loss of infested batches.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle begins when the female weevil bores a hole into the fruit using its rostrum and deposits its eggs. The developing larvae tunnel through the pulp and into the seed. The entire larval stage and the subsequent pupal phase often occur protected inside the nut, which facilitates the rapid spread of the pest during fruit transportation and storage.
Nature of damage. Infested fruits often show minimal surface damage initially, which makes detection difficult. However, as the larvae mature, they create exit holes. The inner nut tissue is reduced to a fine powder mixed with frass, creating a favorable environment for secondary infections like molds, which rapidly destroy the remaining edible material inside the shell.
Protection measures. Effective control involves integrated pest management strategies. Key actions include:
- Strict orchard sanitation by removing and destroying all infested fruits.
- Application of contact insecticides during the emergence period of adult beetles.
- Use of pheromone traps to monitor and reduce the adult population.
- Proper storage protocols, such as drying nuts thoroughly or using cold storage to suppress the development of larvae inside the fruits.
