Copper sulfate

Copper sulfate (CuSO4), commonly referred to in agriculture as blue vitriol, is an inorganic compound widely used as a contact fungicide. It serves as a fundamental tool for managing fungal and bacterial diseases in various agricultural and horticultural settings, providing reliable protection for crops through its chemical efficacy.

The mode of action of copper sulfate is primarily contact-based. Upon application, copper ions are released and absorbed by fungal spores and bacteria, which leads to the coagulation of cellular proteins and the inhibition of essential enzymatic processes. This effectively disrupts the life cycle of the pathogen, preventing the germination of spores and the spread of infections on the plant surface.

This compound is primarily used to control a wide range of diseases, including downy mildew, leaf spots, anthracnose, and various blights on fruit trees, vines, and vegetables. It is also extensively employed in sanitation practices, such as treating pruning wounds to prevent infections and disinfecting soil to eliminate soil-borne pathogens before planting.

Application requires careful attention to dosage and timing. Because copper can be phytotoxic to actively growing foliage, it is most frequently applied during the dormant season. Growers often neutralize the acidity of copper sulfate with lime to create Bordeaux mixture, which adheres better to foliage and reduces the risk of chemical burns on treated plants.

Safety precautions are essential when handling copper sulfate. It is considered toxic to humans and aquatic organisms if mismanaged. Protective clothing, gloves, and respiratory equipment should always be worn during mixing and spraying. It is critical to ensure that spray drift does not contaminate local water bodies, as copper compounds are highly toxic to fish and other aquatic life.
