Description

Helminthosporium root rot is a common and destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Bipolaris sorokiniana (formerly known as Helminthosporium sativum). This disease primarily attacks the root system and the sub-crown internode of cereal plants, severely impacting their physiological development and overall yield potential.

The host range of this pathogen includes various small grains such as wheat, barley, and oats, as well as several wild grass species. The fungus is soil-borne and seed-borne, allowing it to persist in crop residues and infect new seedlings as soon as they germinate, posing a continuous threat throughout the growing season.

The symptoms often appear as dark, necrotic lesions on the seedling roots and the crown. As the disease progresses, infected plants exhibit stunted growth, yellowing of the lower leaves, and, in severe cases, the development of whiteheads or premature death of the entire plant. Under humid conditions, dark olive-colored spores may become visible on the affected tissues.

Environmental conditions that favor the pathogen include warm temperatures and high soil moisture. Poor agricultural practices, such as monocropping of cereals, inadequate fertilization, or late planting in cool soil, significantly increase the disease incidence and the potential for crop failure in infected fields.

Integrated management is essential to minimize damage caused by this pathogen. Key strategies include using certified, fungicide-treated seeds, implementing diverse crop rotations to break the pathogen's life cycle, managing weeds that serve as alternative hosts, and ensuring optimal soil fertility to boost the vigor and resilience of the crop.
