A high-yielding variety with large berries and a high vitamin C content, offering robust resistance to key fungal diseases.
Description
Genetic Potential and Productivity
The 'Oriana' blackcurrant variety is the result of collaborative breeding efforts by the Institute of Horticulture of the NAAS and the National Research Center 'Institute of Agriculture of the NAAS'. The development of this hybrid focused on balancing large berry size with high adaptability to common phytopathogens. The practical outcome is a consistent yield of 3–4 kg per bush while maintaining excellent marketability.
Agronomic Features and Disease Resistance
A key technical advantage of this variety is its complex resistance to the most common berry diseases: anthracnose, septoria, and powdery mildew. This significantly reduces the pesticide load on the plantation by minimizing the need for frequent fungicide applications. The ripening period is in the medium range (45–55 days from bud break), allowing farmers to efficiently manage harvest logistics.
Fruit Morphology and Biochemical Profile
Oriana berries range from 1.9 to 2.5 cm, making them highly desirable for the fresh market. The biochemical profile is tailored for both fresh consumption and processing:
- Vitamin C content: 200 mg/100g, an excellent level for this crop.
- Sugar content: 8 %.
- Acidity: 2.5 %.
The sugar-to-acid ratio provides a balanced flavor profile suitable for both freezing and industrial processing. Thanks to the firm skin, the fruits exhibit excellent shelf life and transportability, which are critical factors for commercial cultivation.
