Description
The 'Svetlanka' currant variety is a mid-season variety developed at the VIR 'Polar Experimental Station' branch through the crossing of the Hibinskaya and Pervenets varieties. The bushes of this variety are medium-sized, weakly spreading, and dense, with thick green shoots that are hairless. The leaves are five-lobed, large, dark green in color, with a leathery, shiny, and smooth surface. The flowers are large and pale-colored, while the clusters are long and dense, containing 10 to 13 light red berries with a thin skin and a pleasant, delicate taste of medium acidity. The berries of the Svetlanka variety are small, weighing from 0.4 to 0.6 grams, round in shape, and uniform. The fruit stalk is of medium length, green, with a half-open round calyx. The chemical composition of the berries is characterized by a sugar content of 5.5%, a titratable acidity of 3.4%, and a high ascorbic acid content — 64 mg per 100 grams. Ripe berries do not fall off and remain on the bush for a long time without losing their taste qualities, making the variety convenient for long-term storage and use. The Svetlanka variety is distinguished by high winter hardiness and resistance to diseases such as powdery mildew and anthracnose, as well as pests. It has a high degree of self-fertility (68-86%) and high yield — an average of 18.2 tons per hectare or about 5.5 kilograms per bush. These qualities make Svetlanka a reliable and productive choice for cultivation in northern regions.
