Systemic Weed Control: How Richard Works

The Richard herbicide, produced by China Chemical Industrial and Research Co. Ltd., is based on the isopropylamine salt of glyphosate. It is a systemic non-selective herbicide absorbed exclusively through the foliage. Unlike soil-applied herbicides, the efficacy of Richard depends on the physiological activity of the weed at the time of application, as the active ingredient must be transported via the phloem to the roots and growing points.

Technical Formulation Insights

The aqueous solution of the isopropylamine salt provides rapid absorption. Glyphosate inhibits the EPSPS enzyme, which is critical for the synthesis of aromatic amino acids. This leads to the cessation of cell division and eventual plant death, including rhizomatous perennials. Richard is highly effective against challenging weeds such as couch grass (Elymus repens), field thistle, and sow thistle by systematically destroying underground root structures.

Practical Application: From Herbicide to Desiccant

The versatility of the formulation allows Richard to function as both a herbicide and a desiccant. When applying to soybeans, sunflowers, winter wheat, winter barley, or sorghum, it is essential to adhere to the dosage requirements of over 3.0 L/ha. The application is limited to a maximum of two treatments per season due to the significant impact on the plant's metabolism during desiccation.

• Foliar Control: Targeted application on actively growing weeds (like lambsquarters, green foxtail, and volunteer grains) ensures a clean seedbed or fallow field.
• Desiccation: Accelerating crop maturity and drying out weeds facilitates more efficient harvesting and reduces yield losses.

Because Richard is a non-selective agent, users must take extreme caution to avoid contact with non-target crops unless the specific purpose is pre-harvest desiccation.
