By inhibiting the enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), it disrupts the production of essential aromatic amino acids. Without these building blocks, the plant cannot synthesize necessary proteins, leading to cessation of growth and eventual plant death.

It is extensively used in pre-plant burndown programs, fallow land management, and as a harvest aid (desiccant) for various crops like wheat, soybeans, and cotton. The systemic nature of the salt allows it to be translocated from the leaves down to the roots, rhizomes, and stolons, making it highly effective against perennial weeds that regrow from underground parts.
