Description
The "Balkysh" soft spring wheat variety (Triticum aestivum L.) is a medium-maturing variety with a vegetative period of 80 to 97 days, maturing 2-3 days later than standard varieties. The plant is characterized by a medium-short stem with weakly expressed awns and a strong waxy bloom on the spike and the glume of the flag leaf. The spike is pyramidal or spindle-shaped, of medium density, white in color with short awn-like appendages. The kernel is pigmented, the mass of 1000 seeds varies from 34 to 44 grams, which provides good sowing ability and grain quality.
The variety is distinguished by high resistance to lodging and a number of diseases, including brown rust and septoria, making it a reliable choice for various regions. In the Middle Volga region, the variety shows resistance to lodging and drought at a level equal to or above standard varieties, moderate resistance to powdery mildew, and susceptibility to root rots and covered smut. However, the variety is highly susceptible to loose smut. In the West Siberian and East Siberian regions, disease resistance is lower, with moderate susceptibility to brown rust and powdery mildew, as well as strong infection by loose smut and root rots in field conditions.
The yield of the "Balkysh" variety varies depending on the region and growing conditions. In the Middle Volga region, the average yield is about 35.1 c/ha, with maximum figures up to 60.4 c/ha, especially in the Republic of Mordovia and Tatarstan. In the West Siberian and East Siberian regions, the yield is lower — 25.1 and 23.2 c/ha respectively, with maximum values up to 55.2 c/ha. The baking qualities of the variety are good, making it attractive for the production of quality flour and bakery products.
