German selection by Saaten-Union in the winter soft wheat variety 'Centurion' focuses on compactness and biomass management. With a plant height of 70–80 cm, it demonstrates excellent resistance to lodging, which is critical for intensive cultivation technologies where the risk of crop collapse at high yields (7–8 t/ha) increases significantly.
Biological protection and immune profile
Centurion is designed as a tool to minimize fungicide applications. The genetically embedded resistance to septoria allows the plant to preserve the photosynthetic surface of the flag leaf until the grain filling is complete. In field conditions, the variety demonstrates high tolerance to a wide range of pathogens:
- Mycosphaerella leaf spot and brown leaf spot are suppressed at early development stages.
- Plant rust (stem and yellow) does not cause critical damage due to dense cell walls.
- Powdery mildew and fusarium (including ear blight) have limited opportunities for spread within the crop.
Grain quality: technical indicators
The internal architecture of the kernel is optimized for baking standards. A gluten content in the range of 25–30% classifies Centurion as a variety capable of consistently providing commercial grain with high quality indicators. The low plant height redistributes resources from straw formation toward the ear, allowing for the realization of an 8-ton potential per hectare with sufficient nitrogen nutrition.
