«Kyivska ostysta» is a soft winter wheat variety developed by the Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics of the NAS of Ukraine. Designed for high-input farming, this variety stands out due to its ability to form a dense canopy with 5.0–5.5 million productive stems per hectare. Under optimal agronomic management, it demonstrates a high yield potential of 9–10 tons per hectare, competing effectively with top-tier European wheat varieties.
Phytosanitary Resistance
The variety’s genetic architecture provides broad-spectrum resistance, essential for reducing fungicide dependence in intensive production systems. It shows high tolerance to several key pathogens, including:
- Leaf rust and powdery mildew;
- Septoria and brown spot;
- Fusarium and root rot;
- Mycosphaerella spot.
This high level of field immunity ensures stable yields even under environmental conditions that typically trigger disease outbreaks.
Grain Quality and Stem Architecture
«Kyivska ostysta» produces high-quality grain with a gluten content of 25–30%, meeting industry standards for milling and baking. The variety features an awned spike structure, which aids in grain development and protection during the ripening phase. A critical engineering aspect of this wheat is its strong resistance to lodging.
