Practical insights on growing winter durum wheat «Alyi Parus»

Agronomists often highlight the predictability of «Alyi Parus» in the field. This winter durum wheat variety, developed by the Breeding and Genetics Institute (Odesa) with major contributions from L.T. Babayants, is well-adapted to Ukrainian climatic zones. For an equipment operator, this variety is highly efficient.

Operations and Agronomics

With a plant height of 90–100 cm, this wheat shows excellent lodging resistance. This is critical for intensive farming, as it allows operators to run combine harvesters at high speeds without the risk of header clogging caused by lodged crops. The awned nature of the variety also helps reduce bird and pest pressure during the ripening stage.

Protection and Cost Management

The economics of «Alyi Parus» are driven by its strong genetic immunity. The variety shows significant resistance to key diseases:

• Yellow and Brown rust — these require less intensive fungicidal pressure.
• Septoria and Powdery mildew — damage remains minimal when proper crop rotation is followed.

This natural resistance significantly lowers the number of mandatory fungicide applications, reducing the final production cost per ton.

Sowing Performance

The 1,000-kernel weight ranges from 40 to 45 grams, a high-quality metric for durum wheat that ensures stable germination if sowing depth is managed correctly. The resulting yield is uniform, making post-harvest cleaning and calibration straightforward. Maintaining crops of this variety does not require experimental methods; standard winter crop agronomy allows «Alyi Parus» to reach its full potential, ensuring a predictable yield in the grain tank.
