Description
Universiada is a soft winter wheat variety created by intra-specific hybridization followed by individual selection from the hybrid population (Kazan 285 x Omsk winter) x Kazan 285. The variety belongs to mid-late maturity types, with a vegetation period ranging from 293 to 338 days. Plants are of medium height, ranging from 78 to 107 cm, forming an even stem with a cylindrical, medium-length and density spike. The mass of 1000 grains ranges from 36 to 45 grams, the grain is colored, and the natural grain weight varies within 790-810 g/l. Universiada is characterized by enhanced winter hardiness and lodging resistance, surpassing the standard Kazan 560 in this regard.
The variety is recommended for cultivation in the Volga-Vyatsk and Central Volga regions, as well as in the Sverdlovsk region and the Udmurt Republic. It demonstrates high yield – the average yield in the Volga-Vyatsk region is 31.3 c/ha, with a maximum recorded yield of 78.3 c/ha in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Universiada responds well to the application of mineral fertilizers, providing an increase of 9 to 12 kg of grain per kilogram of active nitrogen substance.
In terms of disease resistance, the variety is susceptible to brown rust and also prone to moderate infection by septoria and powdery mildew, and strong infection by snow mold. The baking qualities of the variety are good, which makes Universiada a valuable wheat for producing high-quality grain. Drought resistance of the variety is at the level of known varieties Kazan 560 and Bezenchuk 380, which makes it a reliable choice for various climatic conditions.
