Description
Systematic position and nature of the pathogen. Fusarium graminearum is a significant fungal plant pathogen within the Fusarium genus, belonging to the Fungi kingdom. It is recognized as the primary agent within the Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC), known for its aggressive colonization of cereal crops and its worldwide economic impact on agriculture.
Diseases and host range. This fungus is the main cause of Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), commonly known as scab, which affects small-grain cereals like wheat, barley, and oats. In maize, it is a leading cause of ear rot and stalk rot. Beyond damaging plant tissues, the pathogen poses a severe health risk to humans and livestock due to its ability to produce mycotoxins, specifically deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone, within infected kernels.
Biology and lifecycle. The fungus overwinters on crop debris, such as corn stalks or wheat stubble, as mycelium or perithecia. During warm, moist conditions, it produces ascospores or macroconidia, which are wind-blown or rain-splashed onto susceptible spikes. Flowering (anthesis) is the most critical window for infection, as the fungus colonizes the anthers and subsequently spreads throughout the developing grain head.
Developmental conditions and dispersal. The spread of Fusarium graminearum is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. Prolonged wet weather during the heading and flowering stages creates an ideal environment for spore germination and rapid mycelial growth. Fields with reduced tillage systems, where host residue remains on the surface, are at a significantly higher risk.
Impact and control measures. The pathogen causes substantial yield losses, grain shriveling, and quality degradation. Effective management requires an integrated approach:
- Application of systemic fungicides at the onset of flowering.
- Crop rotation to reduce primary inoculum sources.
- Deep plowing to bury infested crop debris.
- Use of resistant wheat and maize hybrids.
- Seed treatment with appropriate fungicides to prevent early-season infection.
