Oriental fruit moth

Grapholita molesta

Description

The Oriental fruit moth (Grapholita molesta) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is considered a major economic threat to pome and stone fruit production worldwide due to its ability to damage both vegetative and reproductive parts of the plants.

Primary hosts include peach, nectarine, plum, apricot, apple, and pear. In some regions, the pest has been reported to cause damage to other crops, such as soybeans, where larvae feed on the stems, indicating a wide range of potential hosts under specific environmental conditions.

The biology of G. molesta involves multiple generations per year, with the number of generations varying based on the climate. Overwintering occurs as mature larvae in cocoons tucked away in bark crevices, pruning wounds, or leaf litter. Adult emergence typically begins in the early spring, coinciding with the flowering of peach trees.

The damage is twofold: first, the larvae tunnel into the tips of tender shoots, causing them to wilt and die, a condition often called "flagging." Second, and more damaging, they bore into the fruit. This feeding creates internal holes filled with frass, rendering the fruit unmarketable and susceptible to secondary fungal infections.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach:

  • Implementing mating disruption using synthetic pheromone dispensers;
  • Regular monitoring with pheromone-baited traps to time insecticide applications;
  • Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infested fruit and prunings;
  • Encouraging natural predators such as parasitic wasps that target larval stages.

By monitoring flight patterns and utilizing biological controls in conjunction with targeted chemical interventions, growers can successfully minimize the impact of this pest on fruit yields and quality.
