A high-yielding wheat variety with powerful genetic immunity against a complex range of fungal diseases.
Description
Engineering Potential of Bilyava Winter Wheat
Developed by the Selection and Genetics Institute (NCSS), this soft winter wheat variety represents a balanced biological model tailored for high profitability within Ukraine's variable climate. The primary focus of this variety is managing crop phytosanitary status through robust genetic resistance.
Phytopathological Resistance as a Yield Foundation
The key advantage of the Bilyava variety is its complex immunity, which helps minimize fungicide requirements. Breeders have integrated high resistance to pathogens that critically reduce photosynthetic leaf activity into the Bilyava genome:
- Rust diseases: An effective barrier against brown rust, preserving leaf surface area during the grain-filling phase.
- Fungal infections: High resistance to septoria and root rot prevents premature lodging and degradation of the plant's vascular system.
- Comprehensive protection: The variety demonstrates stability under pressure from Mycosphaerella leaf spot, brown spot, powdery mildew, and Fusarium head blight.
Morphotypic Characteristics and Productivity
The plant's biological model is adapted to intensive farming practices. A stem height of 80–90 cm ensures an optimal straw-to-ear ratio, minimizing lodging risks even with high nitrogen fertilization. A vegetation period of 90–100 days allows the variety to efficiently utilize winter and spring moisture to produce large, well-filled grains.
Technical parameters, such as a 1,000-seed weight of 40–45 grams, combined with excellent tillering capacity, result in a high yield potential of 8–9 tons per hectare. For agricultural producers, this means predictable yields even with moderate mineral fertilizer input, as the variety exhibits a high nutrient-to-commodity conversion coefficient.
