Growing «Karavaika» Wheat: A Field-Tested Perspective

When we first allocated a plot for the «Karavaika» variety by Fnats Vim, our main goal was to secure an early harvest without compromising grain quality. The 80–90 day growing cycle allows us to complete harvesting before the peak of summer heat, which is a critical factor in our region. Based on our field experience, the crop behaves predictably and fits well within standard agronomic practices.

Agronomics and Reliability

The first thing you notice during maintenance is the stalk strength. «Karavaika» is resistant to lodging, which significantly simplifies the harvester operator's work. Even during heavy rainfall during the grain-filling stage, the crop remains upright, ensuring minimal losses during harvesting. Regarding disease pressure, Fnats Vim’s breeding clearly targets brown rust and smut suppression. We didn't need any extra fungicide applications beyond the basic protection program, which significantly reduces the cost per ton.

Yield and Economics

The potential of 6–7 tons per hectare is ambitious, but in our farm conditions, we consistently achieve 5–6 tons. On more fertile soil with nitrogen top-dressing, the numbers approach the higher end of the range. The grain produced is uniform and has high specific weight, which is highly appreciated at the elevator.
