An Engineering Approach to Yield: The Genetic Potential of 'Garantiya Odeska'

Developed by the Plant Breeding and Genetics Institute – National Center of Seed Science and Cultivar Investigation, this winter wheat variety is built on the principles of adaptive breeding. The core objective was to create a crop capable of converting soil fertility into a stable yield, even under high disease pressure. 'Garantiya Odeska' is an intensive-type variety, perfectly balanced in physiological metrics.

Biometric Parameters and Development

The plant exhibits a semi-dwarf growth habit with a height of 90–100 cm. This range is optimal: the stalk length ensures lodging resistance without wasting plastic substances on excessive vegetative mass. The grain is characterized by high plumpness (1,000-kernel weight of 40–45 g), which translates to a consistently high commercial grain output and simplified combine settings during harvesting.

Phytosanitary Barrier

The variety’s defense system is embedded at the genetic level. The breeder prioritized resistance to key pathogens that limit productivity in Ukraine:

• Comprehensive Resistance: The variety shows marked immunity to brown rust, septoria, and root rot. This is a critical factor that allows for the optimization of fungicide costs under moderate disease pressure.
• Disease Control: Genetically fixed resistance to Mycosphaerella leaf spot, powdery mildew, and fusarium reduces the risks of grain quality loss during the maturation period.

Productive Potential

The potential yield of this variety ranges from 7 to 10 tons per hectare, depending on the intensity of the agrotechnical approach. This broad range is due to the crop’s plasticity: 'Garantiya Odeska' reacts effectively to fertilization and quality soil preparation, maintaining a high tillering coefficient and ear filling even under stressful weather conditions. Utilizing this variety is an investment in a high-tech field structure, where result predictability becomes the key advantage for agribusiness.
