Siberian Breeding: The Power and Reliability of 'Polyushko' Wheat
The 'Polyushko' wheat variety is the result of long-term development by breeders at the ICG SB RAS. Created under the leadership of Nadezhda Stepochkina and Petr Goncharov, this soft spring wheat variety was designed specifically to meet the needs of farms operating in challenging agricultural environments. Thanks to its Siberian “toughness,” the variety shows remarkable stability even during shifting climatic cycles.
Agronomic Potential and Productivity
The main advantage of 'Polyushko' is its combination of a short vegetative period (80 to 100 days) and high grain quality. The variety consistently achieves a gluten content of over 30%, making it a highly valued raw material for the baking industry. With a yield potential of 8–10 tons per hectare, it ranks among the top performers of intensive-type spring crops.
Crop Health
A key feature of this variety is its resistance to a wide range of pathogens. 'Polyushko' demonstrates high immunity to the most dangerous diseases, reducing the farmer's dependence on chemical fungicides:
- Plant rust and brown leaf spot;
- Mycosphaerella leaf spot;
- Powdery mildew;
- Various types of rot and onion stem smut.
The thousand-kernel weight ranges from 30 to 40 grams, ensuring excellent germination energy. Moderate to good lodging resistance allows farmers to plan harvest operations without unnecessary risks of crop loss, even during periods of heavy rainfall during the ripening stage.
