Description
Tverdyya is a medium-late variety of hard spring wheat (Triticum durum Desf.), characterized by high yield and excellent pasta qualities. The vegetative period lasts 79-93 days; the variety matures 4-6 days later than the Donskaya Elegiya variety. The grain features high vitreosity, natural weight, and a white, semi-long shape without a beard at the base. The mass of 1000 grains varies from 35 to 49 grams, indicating high-quality raw material for pasta production.
The plant has an average height of 48 to 96 cm depending on the growing region, with a semi-erect bush and moderate tiller length. The spike is pyramidal, red in color, of medium length (6.0–7.0 cm) and density, with red, rough, and barbed awns measuring 13–16 cm. A waxy coating on the spike, flag leaf sheath, and tiller neck is expressed very strongly, contributing to resistance to unfavorable conditions. The variety is resistant to lodging and drought at the standard level and demonstrates resistance to powdery mildew and weak susceptibility to dusty bunt. Under field conditions, it shows weak infection by stem and brown rust but strong infection by septoria.
Tverdyya is recommended for cultivation in various regions of Russia, including the Western Steppes zone of the Orenburg region, as well as the Belgorod, Kursk, Lipetsk, and Oryol regions. The average yield of the variety in these regions reaches 45 c/ha, which is 4.7 c/ha higher than the standard average, with maximum figures up to 89.4 c/ha recorded in the Kursk region. Thanks to its high technological and agronomic characteristics, the Tverdyya variety is a reliable choice for producing high-quality hard wheat with excellent pasta properties.
