Description
The Velena wheat variety is a medium-late maturing soft winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) with a vegetation period ranging from 218 to 279 days. The plants are medium-height, standing 90-100 cm tall, with short stems and a semi-erect bush shape. The leaves are green, covered with a medium waxy bloom during tillering, and are non-hairy. The ear is cylindrical, white in color, of medium length from 7.5 to 9 cm, with a dense structure and awn-like appendages in the upper third measuring 5-20 mm. The grain is egg-shaped, of medium size, red in color, with a shallow groove and a naked base. The Velena variety is distinguished by its high yield and resistance to lodging, making it attractive for cultivation in the North Caucasus region of Russia, including Krasnodar Krai, the Republic of Adygea, and the Azov and Southern zones of Rostov Oblast. The potential yield with autumn sowing reaches 100 c/ha, and with spring sowing, it exceeds 60 c/ha. In variety trials, the yield averaged 80.8 c/ha, with maximum indicators reaching up to 106.4 c/ha. The variety possesses high drought resistance and medium frost hardiness, allowing for successful cultivation under various climatic conditions in the region. Velena is characterized by good milling and bread-making qualities and is classified as a valuable wheat variety. It is resistant to diseases such as brown, yellow, and stem rust, septoria, and powdery mildew, while exhibiting medium resistance to ear fusarium. However, the variety is susceptible to viral infections. These features make the Velena variety a reliable choice for agricultural producers seeking high-quality grain with excellent technological properties.
