Description
Wheat variety 'Saratovskaya 29' is a spring soft wheat of medium maturity with a vegetative period from sowing to wax ripeness of 85—90 days. The mass of 1000 grains averages 28.5 grams, while the yield in favorable years reaches 37 centners per hectare. This variety is distinguished by high drought resistance and good baking qualities, making it in demand in various agro-climatic zones. Historically, the variety was widely distributed and used over an area of more than 21 million hectares, becoming the basis for breeding new wheat varieties.
Variety 'Saratovskaya 29' possesses resistance to powdery mildew, however it is susceptible to infection by brown rust. To increase resistance to these diseases, genes were introduced in breeding that ensure immunity to aggressive races of brown leaf and stem rust, as well as powdery mildew. These genes were obtained using synthetic hexaploid wheat, which made it possible to create analogues of the variety with different maturity and high resistance to fungal diseases both under natural infection and under artificial inoculation.
'Saratovskaya 29' continues to be actively used in breeding due to its high agronomic indicators and adaptability. The variety is characterized by a medium degree of infestation by the Swedish fly and demonstrates stable productivity even in arid conditions. Due to the combination of high yield, drought resistance, and improved protection against diseases, this variety remains an important element in agricultural production and breeding work.
